Common Types of Specialty Keys

Common Types of Specialty KeysWhen people think of keys, they tend to think of a traditional house key. Simple in form and function, perfect for getting you in and out of your home or office. The thing is, there have been many advancements in key and lock technology, which makes increasing security of a house, car or any other piece of property much easier. Here's a look at a few types of keys that can enhance your safety and security.

Transponder Keys

Today, most vehicles use transponder keys. They are also known as a fob and utilize a radio signal to unlock doors. While cars and trucks most often use this technology, it is becoming more commonplace for homes and other buildings.

Laser Cut Keys

If you prefer a traditional style key, but want added security, consider laser cut keys. These metal keys appear like normal keys, but are laser cut, which allows them to have very fine ridges and grooves, making them difficult to duplicate and their locks harder to pick.

Keycard Key

A keycard key, used most often in businesses and hotels is an electronic key that fits in your wallet like a credit card. It uses radio signals or magnets and can be tapped or inserted to unlock a lock, depending on how it is set up. These keys are great because they can be continuously reprogrammed for extra safety.

Tube Key

A tube key, or tubular key, is a short key that has a tube on it, instead of a traditional toothed ridge. These are popular with vending machines and bike locks, but are seeing increased use as an added security measure on home locks and otherwise.

Magnetic Key

Using zero electronic technology, a magnetic key can have thousands of different combinations, making it a great choice for added security.

The right key can vastly improve safety. If you're in need of new keys in Reno reach out to Reno Sparks Lock & Safe.
