Common Types of Residential Locks

When it comes to home safety you have many options. Whether you want to upgrade your current lock system in your house, you're building a new house, or you just want to change the lock on a single doorway, there are many types of locks to choose from. Depending on the amount of security you want for your home, you can get everything from a basic key lock to a complex keyless entry system. Here are some common type of locks to help you decide what you need when it is time to replace your home's locks.

Keyed Locks

The most common type of lock is a keyed entrance lock. They generally have an interior lock with an exterior keyhole on the latch or doorknob.

Deadbolts

Deadbolts can come in single, double or even more cylinder applications. These locks are generally used in addition to keyed door knobs for added security. The more cylinders the safer the lock. On the interior there is usually a lever to lock the mechanism by hand with a keyhole on the outside.

Privacy Locks

These types of locks are usually used only in interior applications of the home, such as for bathrooms or master bedrooms. They usually have a button on the inside to push that locks the door and features a small keyhole that requires a special tool to unlock it from the exterior.

Electronic Locks

For added security you can consider using an electronic keypad lock that requires a numerical code to unlock the door. These can be used with or without a key system as well. This type of lock is one of the toughest to get into and is great for exterior doors or interior doors that lead to rooms with safes, guns or other materials that shouldn't be accessed by visitors or children.

When you need a new lock be sure to discuss your needs with your local locksmith to ensure you get exactly what you want in regard to security and access.
