How To Handle an Automobile Lockout

Handle an Automobile LockoutIt happens to the best of us: at some point, your routine gets disrupted and you accidentally lock your car with the keys inside. An automobile lockout is never convenient, and it usually means you're going to be late for something. However, by keeping calm and knowing what to do, you can usually get back in your vehicle and get on your way again quickly and safely. Here are a few common-sense tips to follow when a lockout occurs.

Call for backup

If you have a set of spare keys at home - and someone who's able to deliver them to you - this is usually the quickest and cheapest way to get back in your vehicle if you're not too far from home. There's no reason to call a locksmith service if someone can get your spare keys to you in a reasonable amount of time.

Call a mobile lock specialist

If a mobile locksmith is needed, it's best to call someone who specializes in automobile lockouts and offers quick response times. (You might want to have this information with you in advance, before a lockout happens, to speed up the process even more.) Even better, choose a locksmith service that offers 24-hour emergency service, since lockouts can occur any time day or night.

Don't try to "jimmy" the lock

You often see people who are locked out of their cars trying to trigger the lock themselves, usually by fishing around with a coat hanger or similar item. We advise against this for two reasons: 1) you can do damage to your car if you don't know what you're doing; and 2) someone might mistake you for a thief, and you'll have some explaining to do to the police. Just be patient until the locksmith arrives.

Don't leave your vehicle

If you've locked yourself out of the car, chances are you've probably left some other valuables in there with them, like a wallet or cell phone. Stay near your vehicle until the locksmith service arrives, especially if you have valuables visible through the windows. Thieves won't care if your car is locked, nor will they care how much damage they do to the vehicle when stealing your stuff. If you must leave the vehicle for any length of time, try to stay where you can see it. (You also don't want to be off doing something else when the locksmith arrives.)
